Bradley Wiggins wins silver medal at World Championships 2011 – Cycling Update
British cyclist Bradley Wiggins has managed to secure a silver medal for Great Britain as he finished the Elite Men time trials in second place. Wiggins finished the race in a total time of 1:15:83 as he defeated the four time Champion Fabian Cancellara
with a mere difference of 5 seconds. Tony Martin of Germany won the gold medal whereas Wiggins and Cancellara scored silver and bronze medals respectively.
The Briton has scored the first medal at a World Road Race event as he managed to maintain his lead over the mighty Cancellara. He will be representing his country at the 2012 London Olympics in front of the home crowd and will also participate at the Tour
de France 2012. Wiggins mentioned that he is now concentrating at the ongoing Championships and will consider his future options later. He said, “I’ve got too many options, that’s the trouble.” He further mentioned that, “I’ll worry about it in the winter.
But it’s certainly good news that I can ride a Tour of Spain, and back it up with a ride like that. Still, it was a minute behind this guy.”
The 31-year-old was seen steaming in at the second lap as he finished it quicker than the first one and almost ended up crashing in the barriers. He missed his braking point during the race and was lucky to survive without any serious damage. He mentioned,
“I lost a millisecond of concentration, when you want to give everything, that’s the risk.” Fabian started the race quicker than Bradley but could not match up his pace and lost the silver medal by a difference of 5 seconds.
Bradley is having a wonderful season as he finished the Vuelta a Espana at third position overall and held on to the red jersey from stage 11 to stage 15. Wiggins is currently the top British cyclist at the UCI World Individual Rankings as of September 2011.
He has secured 289 points and is at seventh position as his silver medal will certainly give a lot to his British fans back home and at Copenhagen supporting their hero.
