Bradley Wiggins wins the 2012 BBC Sports Personality of the Year award
Bradley Wiggins’ terrific 2012 season finally came to an end, after the Brit received the most prestigious award of the year, the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award.
Wiggins faced tough competition but managed to win the vote ahead of the US Open tennis winner Andy Murray and Olympic heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis.
The cyclist became the first ever British rider to claim the first overall spot at the most prestigious cycling race of the season, the Tour de France 2012 after his consistent performance during the three-week race.
He was supported by strong Team Sky line-up and David Brailsford did well to provide Bradley with an ideal unit at the French Grand Tour.
He also claimed overall victories and stage wins at the Paris-Nice, Tour de Romandie, Criterium du Dauphine and third at the Volta ao Algarve 2012 and off course, the London Olympics Gold Medal.
It was Wiggins’ sixth appearance at the French race as he improves his previous best performance of third overall finish at the Tour de France 2009.
The 32-year-old was delighted on receiving the honours and thanked his team-mates and General Manager for their endless support throughout the season.
"What a year, to stand on this stage with the people next to me is incredible”.
“I'd like to thank my team-mates, I wouldn't be on this stage without them. I'd like to thank [British Cycling chief] Dave Brailsford, the coaches, British Cycling, Team Sky and all the Olympians," he concluded.
"I feel embarrassed because so many other people played a part in this sporting year. It was amazing”.
“At the end of the day we’re just the athletes. That sound really demeaning but there is an incredible team of people behind every athlete in this room who make it happen and I’m no different," he concluded.
The 2012 season was definitely very fruitful for British Sports with several peak performances throughout the season, however, Bradley’s yellow jersey operation in France was something that British fans has awaited for more than a 100 years.
Britain achieved the third overall position in terms of the total medal tally in the 2012 Olympic Games after the United States of America and the People’s Republic of China which is quite astonishing considering the population of other two countries in
comparison to Britain.
