Timothey Bradley assessing new Gary Shaw offer
A bout between Timothy Bradley and Devon Alexander is one small step closer to a signed reality today as negotiating breakthroughs between Bradley and promoter Gary Shaw have Bradley weighing options,
Dan Rafael of ESPN reports.
Alexander, the current WBC/IBF junior welterweight champion, manager/trainer Kevin Cunningham and promoter Don King had already come to an agreement with Shaw and HBO, when it was confirmed that Bradley
and his handlers had not come to terms with Shaw.
The issue at hand was reportedly Shaw’s insistence that Bradley agree to an extension of their contract beyond its May 10 date in return for the Alexander fight. Bradley, who is interested in looking
at other promotional offers, rejected the request.
Instead Bradley’s team wishes to make the fight with Alexander and then utilize the opportunities of free agency.
Cameron Dunkin and Michael Miller, who manage Bradley, said that Shaw offered Bradley a two-fight deal this weekend as an alternative to an extension. The arrangement would include an Alexander fight
plus a contractual rematch.
Cunningham confirmed that Alexander had already agreed to a rematch.
Miller said: "HBO is willing to do both fights and so are we, as long as the rematch takes place by May. But we'd give them until June 4."
In the two fights, Bradley would make career-high paydays of $1.1 million for the first fight in January and $1.2 million for the rematch. His performance during the first bout would not alter a second
payday.
Miller stated that Bradley is interested in the arrangement but that he is still talking it over with his family. He thinks the “money is still short, but he wants the fight.”
Miller also suggested plotting and signing a second fight was essential for all parties, since it meant that Bradley would get another seven-figure payday, and that Shaw would have Bradley for at least
one more fight after his original promotional contract runs out.
