Braga star Nuno Gomes has backed former Benfica teammate and friend, Fabio Coentrao, to succeed at Real Madrid and has also praised his abilities to perform at the highest level.
The 35-year-old recently parted ways with Benfica after almost 12 years of dedicated services over a contract dispute. After leaving the club on a free transfer, he eventually moved to Braga SC despite lucrative financial offers from the Middle East and
the MLS.
Among the plethora of players he starred alongside at Estadio da Luz was Fabio Coentrao. The defender broke into the Red’s first team in 2009 and took the Portuguese Primeira Liga by storm with his scintillating performances on the left side of the pitch.
Coentrao also played with the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Portugal-c2984 national team at last year’s World Cup and in the end proved to be one of the brightest talents on display as he raised several eyebrows with some excellent displays from the back.
Primarily plying his trade in the wingback role, the Selecao International has garnered notable admiration from the likes of Jose Mourinho and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Brazil-c2858 and Real Madrid legend, Roberto
Carlos.
With such enormous potential and phenomenal skill, the 23-year-old was continually linked with a switch to the biggest clubs in Europe. Real Madrid won the race for his signature ultimately and Coentrao put pen to paper on a six-year deal with Los Blancos.
However, the former Rio Ave man did not come cheap and the Madrid outfit had to part with €30 million and the services of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ezequiel-Garay-c13071 to secure his signature.
Gomes has also reiterated his belief in Coentrao’s undoubted abilities and backed his friend to set the Bernabeu alight with his skills.
"He is an excellent player and a good friend that has evolved in recent years. He will certainly be very successful at Real Madrid. "
Despite occupying a defensive role, Coentrao has proven that he can be of some use on the other side of the pitch as well, netting 8 goals while assisting his teammates 12 times in only 84 outings for the Eagles.
Although he possesses the required ingredients and talent levels to play at the highest stage, it will take a herculean effort from the Vila do Condo player to not only to become the finest left-back in the game but cement his place in Jose Mourinho’s starting
eleven.
Whether he can reach his potential is unclear but what is certain is that he has the backing of one the most recognised strikers in Portugal to make it to the elite level.
