Braiden Oates pockets Boys 400m freestyle gold: Day five – Australian Age Championships, Brisbane
Braiden Oates of Academy pocketed gold medal of the Boys 400m freestyle in the age group of 12-13 Year Olds on fifth day of the 2012 Australian Age Championships at the Sleeman Sports Complex, Brisbane on Friday, April 13.
The 13-year-old Oates faced tough competition from his following swimmer in the mediocre distant freestyle event. With his phenomenal efforts, he managed to outperform his competitors on the finishing end for gold medal.
He posted a time of 4 minutes and 14.58 seconds to capture the crown of the discipline. His nerve-wrecking performance remained just 0.01 seconds ahead of Bran Yong of USA, who followed him on the podium for silver medal by touching the wall with the timing of 4 minutes and 14.59 seconds.
The third spot of the discipline was secured by Braedan Jason of Nudgee Brothers, who stayed nearly 5 seconds slower from his following swimmer and tapped the finishing wall with the timing of 4 minutes and 19.74 seconds for bronze medal.
Subsequently, Amy Forrester of Clayfield acquired gold medal of the 100m backstroke in Girls 14 Year Olds category. Forrester showed no mercy to her challengers throughout the double lap discipline and ended her swim in a wonderful time of 1 minute and 03.31 seconds for gold medal.
Forrester was followed by Sian Whittaker of Surrey Park, who remained nearly half body length ahead of her former finisher and posted a time of 1 minute and 03.97 seconds for silver medal.
Whittaker enjoyed an advantage of Lucy McJannett of Bayside, who stayed just one stroke behind her foregoing swimmer and posted 1 minute and 04.18 seconds for bronze medal.
Sixth event of the session was equivalent event in Boys category, where Nic Groenewald of Nunawading won gold medal of the discipline by touching the wall in a time of 57.56 seconds.
His scintillating form was traced by Tristan Ludlow and Lachlan Angel, who completed their swims in second and third place with timings of 59.68 and 1:00.00 seconds.
In addition, the position holders were called upon the medal rostrum for awards and accolades at prize ceremony of the championship.
