I have to get a brain MRI and I have a permanent retainer on the back of the bottom teeth. It is cemented on, Will this affect the MRI at all?

I have gotten through metal detectors with it so is it metal?

  1. You absolutely can have a MRI, even if you have braces, retainers, dental implants or fillings.  If you have anything in your mouth which is removable, such as dentures, retainers that are not permanent, tongue rings etc, we ask you to remove them.  But, this is not a safety issue.  We ask to remove non-permanent hardware because they can cause an artifact on your images.  This means they can cause the image to be distorted.  If your hardware is not removable, we can still do the scan, however.

Please talk to your MRI technologist immediately prior to your MRI scan.  He/she can reassure you better than any of us.

"Tooth fillings and braces usually are not affected by the magnetic field but they may distort images of the facial area or brain, so the radiologist should be aware of them."

  2. I am a CMA

You have to tell them before the MRI that you have the retainer in and it is permanent.. You should be ok.. If you didn't go off at the metal detector than it is more than likely NOT metal

  3. I don't know, but you'd better ask, because you absolutely CANNOT have anything metal in the MRI chamber with you! It can cause serious injuries to you!!

  4. Tammy C is right! my mom in law had to have a couple and they made her remove her bridge because of it, no metal at all!

  5. there will be pre test questions that will determine your ability to have the test -relax.
