Brake lights and hazard flashes don't work on 89 Chevy pickup.?

My brake lights or hazard flashers aren't working. Turn signals and parking lights are okay. I was told to replace the brake light switch, which I did, but that didn't do anything for me. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  1. On that truck i think it has a fuse for the stop lamps ,hazard /tcc.check for a bad fuse, remove one of the rear lensand check the bulb because there different from your tail lamps and signal lights.By the way take a test light and check to see if you have juiceat that new brake light switch.

  2. Sounds like turn signal switch failure (even if the signals do work). The brake light circuit runs from the brake pedal switch to the signal switch, then to each brake light (left/right).

Just to verify, follow the wiring harness along the steering column, from the switch toward the firewall. You will come across a flat multi-conductor plug (has somewhere around 10-14 wires). Just check that all are still attached inside the plastic plug; do a 'pull' test on them to make sure that they are still attached.

Second, while pressing on the brake pedal, smack the top of the steering column with a rubber/plastic mallet, or even the backside of a screwdriver to see if you can get the lights to flicker.

I'm still betting on faulty signal switch. Replacement required removal of steering wheel, but since you don't have an airbag, it is actually a fairly easy replacement for your model truck.
