Brake pads on car, please help!!?

my car has been making a noise when i break and when im just driving on the driver side of the car. i was told it was the rear break pads. my friend has just started fitting new ones but he found a problem. the rear pad on the drivers side has worn down to the metal and has caused a bump on the brake pads, is it still safe to drive?

we have a bigger problem though, well im not sure if it is. the rear brake pad on the passenger side is still like new??? why is this? is it safe for me to drive? what is causing it? also thinking about it, the tyre on the front of drivers side has no tread and all the others have and they were put on at the same time, weird. it is a rover 200 by the way.

Alll help welcome, i dont want to take it to the garage if there's nothing really wrong with it as they always find something else.

thank you in advance x

  1. Your brake caliper is stuck and causing uneven wear, and no tread=BAD! Take it to a garage as soon as you get the chance.

  2. Your question is confusing.   If the rear pad has worn down to the rivet or metal,  it shouldn't cause a bump on the pad,  but  a groove in the drum or rotor.   This needs to be "turned"  or smoothed as it will cause new pads to wear faster.   If the drum or rotor is too thin to turn,  it needs to be replaced.   Most auto parts houses can  measure the thickness and turn if possible. Reassemble without turning will not keep the brakes from working, but will eat the new pads off requiring another set sooner.

The difference in wear left to right indicate either bad adjustment,  improper assembly,  or a blocked brake line to the caliper.    Look for fluid loss also.   This definitely is a safety hazard,  making longer stopping distances and possibly pulling to the side when braking.

The make of the vehicle has nothing to do with the wear on one tire.   This is most likely alignment,  the tire is actually trying to scuff sideways while rolling forward.  The vehicle most likely pulls to one side also.    Get this to a good shop,  most full service tire dealers have alignment bays.    The cost will depend on the cause of the problem,   if just alignment it needs reset and tightened,  if bad tie rod ends or bushings,  more to replace.   But  GET IT DONE ---  SEVERE SAFETY HAZARD!      And,  I guess you figured out,   the alignment greatly reduced the life of a tire,  costing you that plus the additional gasoline it took to overcome the added friction of the tire against the road.

Get all the problems fixed.   You will be much safer,  you vehicle will last longer and get better fuel mileage.    Vehicle maintenance is one of the most important things you can do to save money,   fix the problems while they are small before they cause big problems.

  3. break pads are a serious issue.go to the mechanic as soon a you can and get your car checked.your life is more important then your car

  4. Unsafe to drive, you have a sticking brake caliper and this is what causes one side to wear down quicker.

As for the tire you will need to have the alignment checked and if out of specs, do a 4-wheel alignment.

  5. the tread weare is front end aliengment. The breaks ,U cant have metal to metal.very unsafe.the reason on  side is wore and not the other is self adjusters aint working or u have a wheel cylender that aint releasing. In other words its froze.

  6. You need to fix the problem right away! no other option. To save your life and your insurance fee.
