  1. Avid BB5's or BB7's are the only way to go as far as mechs.

  2. BB7's are the only way to go as far as mechs.   lol   :o)

They're easier to set up and adjust, and they take normal Avid pads so they're easier to find when you need them.  The BB5's stop well, they're just a little more hassle all things considered.

I ride BB7's and love them...on three bikes.  If you want some of the features of hydraulic brakes, though, don't shy away from them.  There really isn't much to "look after" with them as far as maintenance.  You'll probably want to learn how to bleed the system but they're nearly as simple as mechanical brakes when it comes to owning and using them.  Plus, you won't have to mess with changing out your cable housing when it wears out.

As far as mechanicals, I really would pick the BB7's over anything else.  The Hayes I've tried didn't work well, and I rode some Gators and Tektro that were about the same.  I'm not sure what it is exactly about the BB7's that works better, but they do.  And they're fully serviceable at home should you ever need to rebuild them or replace parts.
