Question:

Brakes screech in reverse only?

I drive a 2004 Mazda 6 with approx 80k mi. The ONLY time my brakes screech is when i am in reverse. Any ideas?

  1. It's your parking brake. you have drum brakes as your parking/emergency brake. When put in reverse theres a little slack in the brake that puts it at an angle which then makes it screech. Brakes do have a special alyer on them that makes them screeh when they start getting worn, it makes it very apparent to the owner that new brakes are needed (even though you'll still easily have 10k left of life on them).

    I wouldnt worry about them screeching in reverse...


  2. That can happen sometimes, the rotors might need turning and the brake pads might need to be changed

  3. that's the first sign of your brake pads are in need of replacement...the "chirpers"(wear indicators) make noise in reverse before starting to make noise in forward... check the pads ...you'll see
