Brand new sub pump installed and won't "click off"?

We have a 4 month old sub pump that runs occaisonaly as we live in a rainy area. It runs about 7-8 times a day, at least when I notice it running. But since 3 days agoo, it is not sensing that there is no water in it. It is constantly running, and there is steam coming from it. In order to get it to turn off, I have to poke the arm with a long stick. But then when it fills, and runs again, it stays on... What is the problem!!??

  1. The float could have water in it making it heaver then it should be or the lever needs lubing.  If not, the switch is sticking.  The steam means it is getting hot and does pose a fire hazard.

  2. The float is sticking, see what is not allowing it to drop as the water goes down. You may only need to grease the rod that the float slides down.

    This is a sump pump.

  3. Something is defenitely keeping the float from shutting the pump off.

This is a serious safety hazard and needs to be repaired NOW!!!. I have seen several houses that the pump caught on fire from overheating and spewed smoke thoug the entire house.

The sump area is most likely full of some type of crud and should be cleaned.

  4. Sounds like a float problem.
