Brandon Alvarado trounces Mario Umana to move into semi-final round - MBBC Jr. International Update
The talented shuttler Brandon Alvarado marched into semi-finals of Boy’s Singles Under-17 category after beating Mario Umana in MBBC Jr. International on Tuesday, July 17, 2012.
This quarter-final encounter, held in Manhattan, USA, prolonged to three competitive sets before ending with 19-21, 21-16 and 17-21 margin.
Both Guatemala campaigners snapped each other’s heels throughout this race to glory but the higher ranked shuttler locked the honour by prevailing in opening and closing sets.
The unseeded player Mario could live his moment of glory only in second game of the match and crashed out of this tournament.
Now, Brandon Alvarado will be up against second seeded Sabeel Foster of Barbados in second last round of the event.
He will surely utilise the confidence which he has earned through a staggering performance in the preliminary rounds.
In round of eight, he overwhelmed his compatriot shuttler with a striking 2-1 knock and alarmed all other contestants.
Brandon Alvarado started the ball rolling straight away in first set and clinched opening match point in admirable manner.
The fourth seeded shuttler launched a brisk attack in the beginning and gathered valuable points to establish an immediate lead with 6-3.
He carried this momentum in next couple of rallies and placed a respectable total of 9-6 just before the interval.
Though, he lost focus in the middle of the game which resulted in 13-11 figure but Brandon reinstated his authority with a power packed campaign and finished the first set with 21-19 margin.
Next game kept the contest away from being one-sided affair as it saw the suppressed contender of the previous set rising from the dust.
The shuttler from Guatemala, Mario played with great passion and aggression to avoid straight-set defeat.
This time he employed unusual tactics and stunned his challenger with 11-7 score before the break. He did not squander this effort in later part of the game and registered convincing total of 21-16.
Third set was played in same manner but result was different as Brandon struck hard when it mattered.
He bagged first half with 11-10 but then made up the difference with a couple of back-to-back points in third quarter of the set. He ended this match with a favourable result of 21-17.
