Brandon Dubinsky scores pair of goals as New York Rangers edge Chicago Blackhawks
The New York Rangers skated to a close 3-2 victory over the visiting Chicago Blackhawks on Monday, 1 November in an exciting game. Brandon Dubinsky lead the way for the home team with
a pair of goals.
How it happened
The visitors drew the first blood in the game, with Tomas Kopecky scoring a tip-in power play goal at 17:13 of the first period. Duncan Keith earned his 10th assist of season on the play,
while Patrick Sharp also earned an assist. The Rangers made it a 1-1 game at 19:39 when Brandon Dubinsky scored his first goal of the game. Dubinsky’s sixth goal of the season was assisted by rookie Artem Anisimov and Ryan Callahan.
No goals were scored by either team in the second period, but Dubinsky put the Blueshirts ahead 2-1 with a power play goal that was scored 55 seconds into the third period. Callahan and
Anisimov earned the assists on Dubinsky’s second goal of the game. Patrick Kane then replied for the Blackhawks, scoring his fourth goal of the season at 6:08. Jonathan Toews and Keith provided the assists. With the game now tied at two goals apiece, Erik
Christensen scored what proved to be the game-winning goal 28 seconds later, thanks to a little help from Brandon Prust and Michael Del Zotto.
What they’re saying
Most of the Rangers’ offence came from the line of Callahan, Anisimov, and Dubinsky. The three youngsters played well together, and Callahan attributes that the confidence and chemistry
that the three of them have developed.
“A big part of this game is playing with some confidence and that’s what I’m doing right now,” said Callahan. “It’s a pleasure to be able to play with Dubie and Artie. They hold on to
the puck so good in the offensive zone. I just try to get open.”
“We just seem to be able to find each other. We know where we're going and we’ve played together now for a bunch of games and we're getting used to each other and things are clicking.
You get chemistry with guys. I played with Dubie before a little bit in (AHL) Hartford, same with Artie. Right now it’s clicking.”
Christensen, who scored the game-winner, said that the fans may have been expecting the Rangers to lose the game, but things turned out well for the home team in the end.
“I’m sure everyone was thinking, ‘Here we go again, they can’t win in this building,’” said Christensen, who was referencing the Rangers’ 1-3-1 record on home ice coming into the game.
“I was kind of hoping the puck would find me. It was nice the way it came to me. It was a good boost for our team at the right time of the game.”
The Rangers return to action on Thursday, 4 November, when they visit the Philadelphia Flyers. The Blackhawks will face the slumping New Jersey Devils on Wednesday, 3 November.
