Brandon Jacobs fined by NFL
New York Giants running back Brandon Jacobs has been fined $10,000 by the NFL for throwing his helmet into the stands. Jacobs threw his helmet during the third quarter of the Giants' 38-14 loss to the
Colts on Sunday night.
In a statement released on Tuesday by the Giants, Jacobs apologized for the incident. He said he lost his temper, and while he meant to throw his helmet, he hadn't aimed for the stands.
"I want to apologize one more time for accidentally tossing my helmet in the stands," Jacobs said. "It was something that happened because I was frustrated with the game, and I had no business tossing my
helmet in the first place, and I am thankful that nobody was hurt."
Jacobs, who has been relegated to the backup running back position, also revealed that he had a meeting on Monday with head coach Tom Coughlin and general manager Jerry Reese. The meeting, called by the
Giants, came amid reports that the player had requested a trade from the team, frustrated with a reduced role.
"I have not demanded a trade and have no plans to demand a trade," Jacobs said. "The only demand I am making right now is of myself, to be the best player I can be and to help this team win."
Coughlin confirmed on Monday that Jacobs had not asked for a meeting, either to request a trade or to talk about his role on the team.
Jacobs has struggled this season, losing his starting job to Ahmad Bradshaw, and has recorded only 52 yards on 16 carries over two games. Jacobs had rushed for over 1,000 yards in 2007 and again in '08,
before an injury plagued 2009 season saw him record 835 yards rushing.
The Giants will play their next game at home against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday. The Titans have the 21st ranked run defence in the NFL after two weeks.
