Brandon Jacobs left New York Giants for “a couple of hundred thousand dollars” – NFL News
In his seven-year career with the New York Giants, running back Brandon Jacobs won two Super Bowl rings, but after the end of the 2011 National Football League (NFL) season, both Giants and Jacobs decided to part ways.
The move came as a surprise for many, but it looks like that both stakeholders already knew that their association was going to end.
Jacobs started his professional NFL career in 2005 with the Giants. The running back earned his first Super Bowl in the 2007 season during which his form was also brilliant.
He carried the momentum into the next season and once again gave exceptional performance during the 2008 season.
His role was reduced after the 2009 season and, even though the Giants won the Super Bowl in the 2011 season, they released the running back this year.
Apparently, it was the money matter that forced the Giants to part ways with Jacobs as both parties were unable to reach an agreement on the player’s salary.
The development became further surprising when Jacobs decided to join the San Francisco 49ers on a one-year deal.
His payout was not that hefty and, since 49ers already had strong running backs on their roster, Jacobs’ place in the squad was questioned by many critics.
Jacobs still says that he parted ways with the Giants because both parties were unable to agree on financial matters. He recently told Jim Rome of ROME about the reason behind leaving New York:
"It was just money, that’s all it was, a couple hundred thousand [dollars].”
It is certainly surprising to know that a team will lose such a player on such a minor dispute. When asked if the difference was so minor why the Giants did not bring him back, Jacobs said: "You would think so."
Although, Jacobs did not shed much light on the matter, it is evident that both parties were not interested in continuing their association.
If the Giants had interest in keeping Jacobs on the roster, they would have easily offered him the “couple of hundred thousand dollars”.
The defending Super Bowl champions are apparently up for introducing fresh talent at key positions, so as to prepare another healthy squad for the future and it seems that Jacobs was also aware of it.
