Brandon Jacobs wants to retire as a Giant, but the player is keeping his options open – NFL News
Brandon Jacobs loves New York and he has no plans of leaving the Giants as long as he gets a ‘fair’ contract from his team management.
The 29-year-old running back said on Monday, February 13, 2012, that he wants to retire as a Giant. However, he also mentioned his efforts and hard work while asking for a fair contract deal.
Jacobs, who started his professional National Football League (NFL) career with Giants in 2005, is in final year of his contract.
He restructured his contract last year and is willing to do it again, but the Giants have to reach a decision within a month regarding Jacobs’ future with the franchise.
Jacobs said of the new deal:
"I just want everything to be fair. I feel like I put a lot of hard work and dedication into what I do as well and whatever their plans are to try to keep me around here, hopefully we can get it discussed and get things figured out because this is where
I want to be."
After a successful NFL season in which the Giants won the Super Bowl, it does not surprise anyone to see players asking for pay raise and contract extension.
In the regular season, Jacobs started six games while playing 14 where he rushed for 571 yards for seven touchdowns.
In the playoffs, he had 164 yards and a touchdown to his name.
Jacobs asserted that the personnel in Giants’ front office are well aware of the contract situation and said that they know how to handle this matter.
He said:
"As an organisation, they have been doing this stuff for years and they know what they have to do if they want to keep me around and indeed I want to be around. I want to retire as a Giant.”
He further added:
“Those guys have been working in the business long enough to know what they have to do to make it happen."
While talking about his contract, Jacobs also made a surprising comment by saying that if things did not work out between him and Giants, he could also opt for joining New York Jets.
Whether the Jets agree to join hands with Jacobs is a separate debate, but Jacobs’ intentions of leaving the franchise if a proper deal is not offered clearly shows how serious he is about his contract.
Giants’ management should reach a decision soon so as to avoid any confrontation.
