Brandon Morrow comments on shut-down decision of Washington Nationals’ Stephen Strasburg-MLB News

Toronto Blue Jays’ starting pitcher Brandon Morrow comments on the recent shut-down of Stephen Strasburg and states how the circumstances are different now from the same treatment that he received from his team in 2010.
Currently the Nationals are heading to win the Division Championship which makes the decision extremely critical and worth getting in the media spotlight. When Morrow was withdrawn in 2010 by the team, the situation was different.
Strasburg has invited huge media attention ever since the move has been announced by the Nationals’ General Manager Mike Rizzo. The decision of an innings limit has been fiercely criticised by the experts because the Nationals are in an ideal position to
earn the glory this year.
In light of this the absence of a starter who has ensured them successes throughout the season will be felt. It can be costly to an extent of resulting in their possible defeat during important matches in the playoffs.
Whenever pitchers are imposed an innings limit, it indicates the long-term considerations of the teams. The Nationals have removed Strasburg because he had Tommy John surgery before the season and thus needed special care.
The club has provided him rest in order to keep Strasburg healthy for the years to come.
Morrow clarifies that another reason why a hue and cry was not raised when he was shut-down in 2010 unlike Strasburg is the fact that the latter went through the surgery.
“It’s different in the fact that (Strasburg) is coming off of injury — Tommy John surgery — and also different in the fact that they’re competing,” Morrow said. “That’s ultimately what makes it the tough decision. I mean if they were out of it, nobody would
really care. It would probably be a non-issue, nonstory, and everybody would kind of agree with it. They’ve got a great pitching staff and he’s having such a great season — that’s why it’s been a big issue.”
If it was not for the leading position that Washington maintain on the table at the moment, the issue of Strasburg will not have been discussed. This is the main reason behind the difference in reaction from the experts regarding the shut-down of Morrow
and Strasburg.
