Brandon Phillips yet to see contract extension with Cincinnati Reds – MLB News
As Spring Training gained speed on Wednesday, February 22, there were many things to settle in the Cincinnati Reds’ camp. The second baseman Brandon Phillips is awaiting a contract extension offer from the club; something that remained a hot subject during
the past year as well.
"I thought it would be over with by now," Phillips said. "The only thing I can really do is go out there and play the game and do what's best for the team. I love the moves that we made to make the team better. That's what it's all about.”
The three-time Gold Glove Award winner has demonstrated remarkable consistency throughout the years. That he has won the Silver Slugger Award for the Reds distinguishes him in a club that is gradually witnessing ascension.
The Reds, while taking recourse to induct relatively young players in the roster are vying to see a better show this year as it was in 2010 that they won any major title. It is for this reason that Brandon Phillips’ presence in the team will be of crucial
importance.
He had an impressive average of .300 the past season, having had 82 RBIs to his credit and hitting no less than 18 home-runs. With the performance that he exhibited, he came forward as the leadoff hitter for the club in 2011.
However, what hangs in the balance is the extension. Unless this fog clears, nothing can be said about the future of the player. Nonetheless, his focus remains the same and the other issues will have to be managed by the team itself.
"I don't see myself saying anything like that," he said. "I would really love to hear what they've got to say. I am not going to let it bother me. They're going to be talking to my agent more than myself."
He is not inclined to set any deadline for the final talks on the deal given the commitment he has had with the team. It now indeed depends on the club itself how they go ahead with this matter. What is known, however, is that Phillips will be instrumental
in the team achieving some success in the upcoming 2012 Major League Baseball season.
