Former world champion Brandon Rios spoke to the media after his fight against Richard Abril. According to Rios, the fight was a very close one but Abril was holding him a bit too much. Rios also gave all the credit of the fight to Abril but said that it
seemed like Abril was not there to fight.
In the post-bout conference, Richard Abril did not show up and so Brandon Rios had all the time in the world to say whatever he wanted to. When asked about the fight, Rios said, “I tried to give it my best. It was a very close fight. I give all the credit
to Richard Abril but he did not come to fight. He did hit me good but like I said he did not come to fight. It’s not my job to criticize the referee but Abril was holding a lot throughout the fight there is nothing I can do about that. We had a feeling he
was going to hold a lot after watching tape on him. I did get frustrated. He would hold me like if he was trying to break my arm and I even told the referee. A win is a win to me. I love it.”
Brandon Rios will now be moving towards a fight with Mexican legend Juan Manuel Marquez. Marquez defeated Sergei Fedchenko on Saturday night and became the WBO interim jr welterweight champion. In relation to his fight with Marquez, Rios said that he would
love to fight Marquez and that Marquez is a legend but he wants to give fans what they want, adding that if the fight does not happen then his career will move on and life will not stop.
Brandon Rios’ victory over Abril was not really appreciated by fans and analysts around the globe. Most of them thought that Abril was the better man in the ring. Andre Ward, WBO and WBC super welterweight talent, tweeted after the match saying that injustice
prevailed against Abril and this is the reason why boxing as a sport is suffering today.
Whatever the case maybe, at the end of the day, Rios is happy about his win and for him none of this does not matter.
