Brandon Rios beats Richard Abril via split decision – Boxing News
After failing to make weight at 135 lbs, Brandon Rios defeated Richard Abril via split decision on Saturday night. Even though Rios walked away victorious, he still could not prove himself to be the better man. Right after the fight, analysts, former fighters
and fans showed their dismay through social media and interviews. Perhaps it was not the best way to win a fight, especially after Rios proved he was unable to handle Abril’s fighting style.
Richard Abril, who was confident that he would win the fight, was at his best, even by the end of the match. Unexpectedly, Rios won the fight with the scores being 115-113 and 116-112. Judge Glenn Trowbridge rated the fight as 115-113, which was quite close,
while judge Jerry Roth rated it as 116-112. The scorecards showed Rios as the winner, but most spectators believed it was Abril who took the glory.
Brandon Rios, who currently holds 30 wins, 0 losses, 1 tie and 22 knockouts in his portfolio, struggled throughout the fight while Abril, who currently holds 17 wins, 3 losses and 1 tie, was seemingly in control.
Before the fight, Rios had provoked Abril with his statements. Rios looked as confident as ever, but he did not prove his might in the ring. One of his statements before the bout read, “I beat Miguel Acosta when he was in his prime unlike Abril who beat
him on his way down on short notice. I was disappointed when I lost the title because I lost the title to myself, on the scale and not to an opponent. It was my fault 100%. The minute I returned home after that fight (A TKO 11 victory of John Murray on Dec.
3) I went straight to the gym to resume training and hired a nutritionist. It was the best decision I ever made. I’m a beast. I feel so much more energetic and powerful and I’m not missing meals. I’m never hungry.”
It is pertinent to mention here that even though Rios was the winner of the fight, he was not awarded with the $50,000 allocated for the winner since he was not at weight.
