Brandon Rios misses weight for the second time against Richard Abril – Boxing News
Brandon Rios, the former WBA world lightweight champion, is going through a tough time as far as the weight is concerned since during the recent pre-bout weigh-in gathering, Rios has missed the weight for the second consecutive time and therefore will not
be able to grab the vacant WBA lightweight title even if he wins the bout.
According to the details, Rios who is scheduled to take on Richard Abril in a 12-round bout with the vacant WBA title up for grabs, missed the weight by two pounds even when he was given an hour to reduce it.
It must be noted that this was the same reason why the title was stripped off him in the first place. In his last bout against John Murray, Rios was supposed to defend the WBA lightweight gold but since he was unable to make the weight he was relinquished
from his gold with the stipulation that even if he wins the bout he will not be able to win the title.
Rios won the bout via 11th round knockout and since then the gold is still vacant and has not been claimed by anyone. As per the details put forth the media, the Nevada State Athletic Commission has now fined Rios to pay $45,000 out of his purse money of
$450,000. One half of the fined amount will go to the commission whereas the other half will be awarded to Richard.
In addition, the Saturday night bout will also have the same stipulation as that of the John Murray one that is if Abril wins he takes the gold and if not it remains vacant. After the unfortunate incident, Carl Moretti, Vice President Top Rank, revealed
that Rios has agreed to pay an additional amount as well to Abril in accordance with mutual personal understanding.
Carl commented, “Besides the fine, Richard Abril will receive a second sum of money from Brandon Rios, but I am not at liberty to say how much that is. But the fight is on.” Richard will now receive his purse money of $100,000, the $22,500 penalty amount,
undisclosed money offered by Rios and above all if he wins the bout he will also get an additional $50,000 win bonus put up by Top Rank.
Moretti, while expressing his grief at Rios’ not making the weight said, “We’re disappointed that he did not make the weight, of course. He didn’t make the weight, and the lightweight title is not there for him. So it’s disappointing, but the fight is on
and we move on. Let’s get through [Saturday night] and then see what happens. But Abril has a tremendous opportunity in front of him.”
The bout will take place at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino situated in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States and will be televised on HBO’s Saturday night weekly boxing show on April 14, 2012.
