Brandon Rios opponent named, hopes to learn from defeat
An opponent has been named for NABF lightweight champion Brandon Rios when he appears on the November 13 Manny Pacquiao-Antonio Margarito undercard.
Omri Lowther, a Toronto native, has been placed on the HBO pay-per-view mega-card against undefeated Rios, after he impressed many in his last performance in Montreal.
Lowther (14-2, 10 KOs) and a game Henry “Hank” Lundy clashed, in a fight at the end of August that was shown on ESPN2.
Lowther was the WBA Fede Caribe champion in 2009 before being stripped of the title for not defending it. He recently caught up with boxingscene.com to discuss a change of management and the battle with Lundy.
"It's an evolutionary process,” Lowther said. “My new coach Chris Johnson and I gradually learn to know each other. I believe we are now on the same wavelength and the progress will appear in my next fight. Unfortunately for my last fight, everything happened
very quickly [referring to the change in opponent]."
Lowther and Lundy went 10 rounds, with Lundy taking a unanimous decision. Lowther attributes the defeat to the fact that he took the fight at the last minute, when original opponent Edner Cherry pulled out.
"Lundy was truly a world class competitor and I'm proud of my performance. We knew it could be explosive. But I can't be disappointed with my performance. I got up and I gave everything I could,” Lowther said. “Given the fact that it was a last minute
battle, I gave a beautiful performance. At the same time, it is true that a boxer learns a lot in defeat and I am now a better fighter. This defeat showed me how not to not lose again. Lundy was a good experience for me. I hated that I lost this fight, but
I learned in the ring by facing it and I know I can compete."
Brandon Rios is an upcoming prospect who trains with Antonio “The Tijuana Tornado” Margarito in Oxnard, California. Both train under the guidance of trainer Robert Garcia, himself once an established contender. The two hope that their joint appearance
on November 13 will give them greater focus and motivation to beat their opponents.
