Brandon Roy confident about his fitness for the next season – NBA Update
Portland Trail Blazers oft injured guard Brandon Roy has said that he is on the mend and will hopefully be healthy for the coming NBA season.
Brandon Roy is one of the more down beat stories in NBA. The player who showed immense potential, early on in his career has been suffering for some time now as his body seems to have broken down with injuries. Last season, it
seemed as his spirit had broken down too as the player put himself under a lot of emotional strain for not being what he was supposed to be - a franchise star.
He then had the one great game against the Dallas Mavericks in the playoffs, when he led his team to a comeback win. The Mavs still won the series and went on to win the NBA World Championship, but that game gave Brandon Roy his
belief back.
Now the player is using the extended summer break, caused by the NBA lockout, to get healthy and get in shape for the next season. And according to Roy, so far so good,
“I’m doing good, I’m doing great,” Roy said. “Working out, keeping my weight down. And starting to play a little basketball this week. Enjoying the summer, really trying to take my time and keep improving. I’m healthy. I’m in a
position where I’m not battling any soreness or anything, so I feel like I can start improving, getting better with my game. I’m excited.”
The fact that he isn’t in any pain will be a huge boost to the whole Portland Trail Blazers franchise. They signed Roy up to max contract just before the player’s injury worries started and his large contract is now seen as a hefty
burden on the Trail Blazers wage bill.
Still, in the playoffs, Brandon showed that he can be the player for whom Portland has been forking out all that money and if he can get the extended rest his body needs, maybe he can resurrect a flailing career and along with
it, the hopes of many Trail Blazers fans.
At the moment Roy is working in the gym, doing some light basketball practice and taking shots. However, he has restricted himself to just light game action and did not take part in a Seattle exhibition game recently. He says it
has to be just one step at a time,
“Really no room for it now. Really just trying to fine-tune some things and just get better. I’m excited that I’m not in any pain and I can just play and not have any pressure in having to deal with the knees, just go out there
and hoop.”
Here’s to hoping the player is able to finally put his injuries behind him and blossom into the genuine NBA star that his talent justifies.
