Brandon Roy returns to non-contact practice, Says he didn’t consider retirement after recent surgery: NBA Update
It was early last season when former NBA Rookie of the Year and a three time All-Star Brandon Roy decided to bid the league adieu because of his troubled knees. The shooting guard had his knees treated in the time he was out and made a huge splash when he announced his comeback and signed up with the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Roy worked his way through the training camps safely, but two collisions, one in the pre-season game against Milwaukee Bucks and other in the Nov.9 regular-season game against the Indiana Pacers, halted his march. Ten days later, Roy had to undergo an arthroscopic surgery on his right knee and there was a growing speculation that the player might not want comeback again.
That speculation was wrong, revealed the player himself. On Thursday, Roy said that he never considered retirement as an option during the recent injury layoff;
"I never thought about walking away. It was just, for me, do I want to go through another procedure? Or do I want to play through it?" he said.
Roy played only five games for the Wolves before getting injured and was not even a shadow of himself during that stretch. The guard average 5.8 points – 13 less than his career average – on a 31.4 percent shooting from the floor and failed to knock down even a single three pointer in 24.4 minutes per game. The former Portland Trail Blazers star however feels confident that he will adjust quickly;
"The goal was to try to come in and help this team out, so I still have a lot of time left to try to do that. You can't prepare for something like that, but now I've gone through it. About a month later, I'm happy we got it done, and I feel better," said Roy.
Roy is still limited to light on court drills and there has been no official timetable for his return. The Wolves will play four games in the next five days, and it is an assurity that Roy will not be a part of that stretch. What good though is that, Roy’s recovery has been swift and when the season reaches its business end, the shooting guard will be there to help out the Wolves.
