Brandon Stone misses the cut at the 112th US Amateur Championship
Brandon Stone, one of the leading amateur golfers in South Africa, failed to make it to the final 64 players who qualified for the match-play portion of the 112th US Amateur Championship.
Stone, who qualified for the championship, thanks to his 30th spot in the Official World Amateur Golf Rankings, finished at four-over par. His opening-round 72 was followed with a 73 in the second round at the Cherry Hills Country Club.
He was listed among the favourites to qualify for the final stage of the tournament before the event even started. However, he failed to hold onto his form that secured him a victory in the Prince's Grant Amateur early this season
According to him, bad putting was the main reason behind his failure in the event. In addition to that, a couple of bad breaks ruined his chances to excel for the match-plays.
Despite the fact that he had to pack his bags early, he seemed happy with his overall performance. He told that he enjoyed his experience with some of the best golfers in the world.
“Well, obviously it’s been a disappointing two days,” the Els Club Copperleaf golfer said. “I just had too many missed putts and a couple of bad breaks, but I’ve learned lots this week. It was an incredible experience to tee it up in the company of the world’s
top golfers. The standard was very high and to compete at this level, you really need the putts to drop”.
“But I’ll take all I’ve learned and start applying it to the collegiate chapter of my career,” he added. “Hopefully I will get another shot at the Havemeyer Trophy next year”.
Stone currently ranks at number one in the South African Golf Association’s rankings and he will return to the University of Texas, where he will avail the golf scholarship at the end of this month.
Meanwhile, Florida State sophomore Daniel Berger shot an impressive 69 in the second round. However, his first round 75 restrained him from taking a spot in the final 64. He missed the cut just by one stroke, as it was made at 143.
