Brandon Webb does well in extended spring training as Tommy Hunter looks to join the fray
If the Texas Rangers wanted good news, they surely got some in the form of Brandon Webb and Tommy Hunter.
While the club lost its recent fixture against the Toronto Blue Jays at the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, it walked out knowing that good options will be coming to the rotation soon as their two top aces are making progress in regaining full match fitness.
Webb has been in Arizona for a while now and he got to pitch two scoreless innings in an extended spring training against the Seattle Mariners. The veteran punched in his first instructional game outing since the time he was involved with the Arizona Diamondbacks,
last September.
The maestro threw just 16 times in his outing. The player has not been involved with Major League Baseball since 2009.
The quick pitcher was not dealing fastballs in his display on the mound though. He topped his delivery at a maximum of 84 miles per hour.
"It's a start in the process", Texas manager, Ron Washington said. "Now we're going through the process that all pitchers go through. He'll go three innings the next time and see if things pick up from there".
The player may have pitched slower but he did well with the sinker. He also displayed good action on his delivery.
"We just want him to compete", Washington said. "Maybe competition will bring out what we want to see. As he competes, the adrenaline will flow and he'll get more out of his arm".
The player will now be on a tight schedule, pitching between five days till a point in time when he will be shipped off to minor league. Velocity building is the core issue at the moment.
On the other hand, Hunter is proving to be doing better after a right groin strain setback in spring training. The player was in a 40-pitch live batting practice. He will now join Webb and Scott Feldman in Arizona to work on his recovery.
"He did well and got through it well", manager Ron Washington said. "He used all his pitches".
The core members of the team look good and they are well on their way to full fitness.
