Brandon Webb opts for a position in the bullpen if starting role seems less possible
The former Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher, Brandon Webb, is yet to make his appearance in Major League Baseball after his 2009 Tommy John Surgery. With almost two years of absence from the main circuit, the hurler is still in the camp, trying to perfect his
pitch. The ace, who now plays for the Texas Rangers, may not be ready for the starter’s role in May but is willing to offer his services in the bullpen.
"I would do it," Webb said. "I would rather start, but if it's a chance to pitch, I'd do it."
Webb was involved in a bullpen session on Sunday and while his club played against the New York Yankees, he ploughed 70 deliveries to register a good display on the mound. Presently, his team has a good set of players in the rotation. With Colby Lewis, C.
J. Wilson, Matt Harrison, Derek Holland, and Alexi Ogando in the mix, there is barely any room for more starters.
This is one of the reasons why the pitcher is contemplating a role in the bullpen. The ace has been in the relief role before and it was his debut with the D-Backs that saw him pitch from the bullpen. He pitched a scoreless innings before moving on to 198
straight starts in his career until 2008, when he sustained his shoulder injury. The former Cy Young award winner is still looking to make an impression and is willing to compromise his aim.
"Whenever I'm ready to go, we'll re-evaluate it then and where I fit," Webb said. "I don't make that call."
Meanwhile, Lewis is scheduled to return to the Rangers on Monday following a paternity leave. While Michael Kirkman was called up to fill in the blanks from Triple – A, it is now believed that Mark Lowe will be the hurler to go to the Minor Leagues. The
veteran has conceded seven hits and four runs off 3 1/3 innings of play.
General Manager, Jon Daniels, has talked about the situation and he believes that sending Kirkman back is not a done deal yet.
"We'll sit down and discuss it," Daniels said.
There were rumours of position players moving in but with Chris Davis and Andres Blanco on the bench with little game experience, that thought seems weak.
