Brandon Weeden can be Washington Redskins’ new quarterback – NFL News
Oklahoma State’s quarterback, Brandon Weeden, might get an opportunity to start his National Football League (NFL) career this year as the Washington Redskins are showing keen interest in selecting him.
Redskins’ coach, Mike Shanahan, offensive coordinator, Kyle Shanahan, and quarterbacks’ coach, Matt LaFleur, are coaching the South squad for the Senior Bowl.
All these officials are keenly observing the game-plays and Weeden has emerged as one of the few possible quarterbacks who might end up joining hands with Redskins in the upcoming NFL Drafts.
After a pathetic season in which Redskins struggled at the quarterback position, the selection of a new quarterback was anticipated.
Although the management has not confirmed anything about its plans for the drafts, it is believed that a quarterback will be the first priority for them in the drafts.
Weeden, who actually was a baseball player, started playing football in 2007.
He was picked by New York Yankees in the 2002 Major League Baseball (MLB) drafts. Later, he was traded to Los Angeles Dodgers after which he joined Kansas City Royals.
His baseball career was cut short due to an injury. However, he did not lose hope and switched to a sport in which he was accepted.
Mike Shanahan thinks of Weeden that:
“A guy goes into baseball and then all of a sudden he makes a commitment to football, and you say, ‘Hey, does he have the passion? What type of athlete is he? What type of leader is he?’ And you have to just project him into your scheme.”
The coach added:
“It’s great for me to be around him for a couple days because you get to see his passion and his ability and how he relates to the other players.”
Meanwhile, Kyle Shanahan also thinks that recruiting Weeden will be in the interest of Redskins.
He believes that Weeden has edge over other candidates as he is more matured and has also played for the MLB, which would have give him an idea of how to perform under pressure.
He said:
“I think we all understand we’re all a little more confident as 28 years than we were as 21 year olds. It gives him an advantage from that standpoint.”
Redskins lost 11 games in the season and won only five to end up at the bottom of the National Football Conference (NFC) East division.
Their quarterback, Rex Grossman, played well earlier in the season, but performed miserably later.
It will come to no one’s surprise if Grossman is replaced.
