Brandt Snedeker missed the magical 59 by a whisker
After two below average rounds, Brandt Snedeker finally got his act together and shot a magical round. Snedeker shot 12-under 60 on the third day at WGC-HSBC Champions.
However, he must have been disappointed that he missed the magical 59 by a whisker. Snedeker’s round was not only magical but flawless as well. A similar round tomorrow can land him his first WGC title.
Snedeker started the day at the 38th spot but now he is at the 8th, just five strokes behind leaders, Louis Oosthuizen and Lee Westwood.
He took advantage of the par-5s today and that really did the trick for him but he is not the only one taking advantage of those holes. Everybody knows that the key to success at the Olazabal Course lies on the five par-5s.
''The par-5s are all reachable,'' Snedeker said. ''If you drive the ball well, you've got a lot of short irons in your hands. And the greens are rolling great so if you can get feeling good on the greens, you make a lot of putts''.
On the 18th, he only needed a birdie to strike the magical number of 59. However, his shot landed right in the bunker, which did the main damage.
He recovered well from the bunker but needed a 15-foot putt to ace the course. Although he hit a very good putt and the ball almost fell in, but he missed it by a whisker’s distance.
The moment ball missed the hole, he had his club flying in the air in agony but he knew that he had given himself a good chance for the title.
''I definitely had some nerves going, which is good,'' he said. ''I just kept telling myself to give it a chance-you don't have that putt too often in your life so when you do, you've got to give it a good chance of going in''.
''I hit a great putt and it just stinks not doing it,” said the Ryder Cup Rookie.
Fellow American Phil Mickelson is also in contention for his third WGC-HSBC Champions after he shot a 6-under 66.
Lefty is just three strokes behind the duo of Westwood and Oosthuizen.
