Brandt Snedeker takes the runner-up spot at The Barclays
Brandt Snedeker carded a one-under par 70 on Sunday to take the second spot at the US PGA Tour Playoffs’ opening tournament, The Barclays, with a seven-under par score at the end of 72 holes.
Snedeker, who was in a bid to win the second PGA Tour event in the 2012 golf season, got off to a confident start and sank two birdies through seven holes, to get close to the top.
However, bogeys on the 9th and 11th hole put him back on equal par score. Standing on the 18th tee, he did not have any chances to win, as he still was even to the par.
He only managed to get out of the shared second position, to the sole second with a birdie to end the tournament. He finished three strokes behind the winner, Nick Watney, at a seven-under par 277.
According to him, the course conditions were really difficult to play on, as the greens were firm and the fairways did not allow the players to reach the greens, easily.
He also stated that the conditions worsened the last two days, which, in turn, restrained the players to go very low in the tournament.
“It was so tough to play the last two days,” he explained. “The greens were just as firm as I can remember on TOUR; the fairways were as firm as I can remember on TOUR. Just a great test of golf, and more importantly, a great test of how mentally strong
you could stay on the course over the last 36 holes. You knew you were just going to get some bad breaks no, way around it”.
He also praised Watney’s performance and said that he definitely has the chance to make it to the Ryder Cup Team, especially after registering a victory at one of the elite fields on the PGA Tour.
“Nick obviously played great today, to shoot under par today is a good score,” he said. “I think Nick is a candidate; he beat one of the best fields we've ever had out here and played fantastic golf”.
Sergio Garcia, the overnight leader, faltered in the final round and tied for the third position, after recording a four-over par 75 for a six-under par tournament score.
