Brandt Snedeker wins the Tour Championship and takes the FedEx Cup title home
Heading into the final leg of the PGA Tour Playoffs, the Tour Championship, there were a total of five players who had the chance to raise the FedEx Cup trophy with a win at the East Lake Golf Club.
The players included the world number one Rory McIlroy, 14-time major champion Tiger Woods, Nick Watney, Phil Mickelson and Brandt Snedeker.
Snedeker was the only player in the field, who managed to make it to the top of the leaderboard, at the end of the tournament and pocketed a total of $11.4 million as prize money.
His earnings included a $10 million cheque for winning the Playoffs and $1.44 million for a victory in the tournament.
The American star got off to a steady start on Thursday and posted a 68, followed by a 70 in the second round. Entering the weekend, he was listed out of the top-10 players in the field.
However, a sparkling round of a six-under par 64 on Saturday allowed him to make a strong charge on the leaderboard, to share the top spot.
He, along with Justin Rose, was tied for the first position at the end of three rounds. Meanwhile, when Rose faltered for a one-over par 71 on day four, Snedeker maintained his consistency and recorded the biggest victory of his career with a 10-under par
tournament score.
"I had complete confidence in what I was doing out there," Snedeker said. "I putted great all week and made big putts when I needed to”.
McIlroy, who was a hot favourite for a win in the tournament, also praised the way Snedeker played in the tournament.
"He played fantastic," McIlroy said. "He kept the lead and played well out there”.
Rose added: "He's mentally tough, Brandt. It's kind of a different pressure, playing for $10 million. It gets in your head more than other golf tournaments. Other golf tournaments, it's more routine. But this week, it's not routine. We talk about it all
year long, and suddenly you have to walk the walk. And he did a great job of that”.
Snedeker’s victory also earned the American the third spot in the PGA Tour’s official money list.
