Brandt Snedeker’s last-ditch push earned him a spot in the US Ryder Cup team
Brandt Snedeker finally succeeded in impressing the US Ryder Cup team captain Davis Love III, by finishing strongly at the first two US PGA Tour Playoffs events, and made it to the final 12-man squad for the biennial event, scheduled this month.
Snedeker, who failed to make it to the top-eight automatic qualifiers for the US team, had a challenging task ahead of him. He needed to prove his form that he lost after winning the Farmers Insurance Open in January.
For that purpose, he started off the Playoffs on a high note. He recorded a second place finish at The Barclays, followed by another strong performance at the Deutsche Bank Championship, where he settled for the sixth spot on the leaderboard.
The 31-year-old is regarded as one of the best putters on the tour, which was a convincing factor behind his selection in the team.
In a press conference on Tuesday, Love admitted that he named Snedeker because of his putting technique and success on the greens in the past few months.
"We need hot putters, and there really has not been a hotter putter on Tour since the British Open," Love said. "He brings a lot on and off the golf course, brings a lot to the team room, and he can pair really with anybody on our team”.
After getting a call from Love, Snedeker was so happy on his inclusion that he hardly slept on Tuesday night.
"Davis played it very close to the vest and I had no clue one way or another," Snedeker said, via telephone. "I got here ... got a voice-mail from Davis just asking if I brought my putter from Boston and if I wanted to be on the team. I couldn't hardly sleep
last night, I was so excited”.
He is overwhelmed to make his debut in the biennial event along with another three rookies including Jason Dufner, Keegan Bradley and Webb Simpson.
