Hi, I am visiting Vienna in October and I found out that Bratislava (Slovakia) is just 40 kilometres away. Is it worth a visit?

  1. I'm 24, a Masters student from Scotland, and have both Czech and Slovak friends. I've been to Prague and would also like to go to Bratislava. Maybe we could go together? I know at least one person there who could keep us on the right tracks, introduce us to people. I've been to 15 countries but wouldn't say I was terribly street smart.

  2. Its definitely worth a visit, downtown Bratislava has a nice clean medieval core, its much smaller than Prague but its also much less crowded. In the last few years they restored most of the buildings, lots of pubs and places to eat. Well worth a day or two exploring the sights.

By the way, even though Hostel 1 & 2 was supposedly set in Slovakia, much of it was filmed in Cesky Krumlov, in the Czech Republic, none of it was filmed in Slovakia.

  3. I wouldn't... People really hate Americans over there like you wouldn't believe.  I would go to a more friendly area unless you are going with other adults and such... I recommend Prague in the Czech Republic.  A lot friendlier...

  4. Absolutely worth a visit. People who are saying it is dangerous: it's as dangerous as any bigger city in the world. I've been there many times and I never had any bad experiences, except for some cockroaches in a hostel.

There is a lot to do in Bratislava, depending on when you want to go. September kicks off  the Bratislava Music Festivities series which is a superb addition to the city's attractions. This musical celebration highlights the best of the best from Beethoven to classic and new jazz.  Another great aspect about this time of year is the celebration of the wine season. Many wineries open for tours and toast to the new wines. December is a great time to visit as you can experience the Christmas markets a tradition of the region. On New Year's there is a party on the main square. December also host's the city's official Film Festival; the Bratislava International Film Festival.

You can do some great shopping in Bratislava. There are many shops for great clothing styles. Glass work and art is also a specialty of the region. Wine production is quite important in Slovakia so be sure to check out the wine shops or even head to the source at a winery.

I'd recommend you to visit the Tourist office when you're there. When you travel to Vienna by plane, it is very good possible that your flight will land in Bratislava at arrival anyway, instead of Vienna International. Have fun!

  5. worth a vist if u wanna get raped and caged

  6. Watch Hostel and I doubt you will want to go to Slovakia...

  7. Watch Eurotrip and you might want to avoid Bratislava too...

  8. I was there on a business trip a few years ago. I had a good time there. If you are in the area, I would say Bratislava is worth a visit if you stay in the old city centre. There is nothing much in Bratislava city if you venture too far out of the city centre, although there is an old ruin a short boat trip from the city if you want an afternoon out of the city.
