  1. The title is actually a bit of an ironic play on a line from Shakespeare's THE TEMPEST. When John hears of the new technologies and customs of the civilization, he quotes Shakespeare, saying "How beauteous mankind is! O brave new world, That has such people in't!" In the end of course, this turns out to be very ironic. John is optimistic about this "brave new world" and believes it to be a better place than his primitive reservation. The world he finds, however, is anything but better, and ultimately, he cannot cope with it.

  2. not really (at least that I can remember).

It's more a sarcastic, look, look what your good intentions have done. This is the h**l you mindless automatons have allowed, by being so unquestioning.
