Brazil, Argentina, Canada win: FIBA U-19 World Championship for Women, July 25 Roundup (Part 2)
Brazil 79 – 53 Chile
In an all South American clash, there was only one-way traffic as Brazil rolled over Chile in Group F. The Brazilian centre Damiris Dantas was the highlight of the night with 22 points and a massive 18 rebounds. Isabela Ramona also put in a complete performance with 18 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals.
The Chilean side showed no real threat and only small forward Francisca Rojas displayed a worthy performance with 13 points and 6 rebounds. The game was dominated by Brazil throughout and Chile never seemed like staging a comeback. It was an entirely one sided affair where Brazil continuously increased their lead over their counterparts, until the final whistle was blown.
Egypt 73 – 94 Argentina
Argentina were not far behind their rivals Brazil, after producing a spectacular victory over the Egyptian team. Rocio Diaz led the scoring with 20 points and 3 assists. A more solid performance was produced by Celia Fiorotto with 15 points and 11 defensive rebounds. Overall five Argentine players scored in double figures.
The Egyptian side seemed to constitute of just one player, who singlehandedly saved Egypt’s blushes; Power Forward Hagar Amer banked a total of 28 points along with 14 rebounds. She was partially supported by Sara Massoud who scored 14 points and 4 rebounds.
Argentina dominated the proceedings from the start and continued to increase their lead in the first three quarters. However, Egypt displayed a resurgent comeback in the fourth quarter where they managed to score 32 points against Argentina’s 26, albeit, they left it a little too late.
Russia 50 – 66 Canada
In a group E fixture, Canada made their way past Russia rather comfortably. Point Guard, Nirra fields, top scored with 22 points and 7 rebounds. She spent 29 minutes on the court and nailed 7 free throws at 100% shooting accuracy. Michelle Plouffe also did well with 17 points and 4 rebounds.
The Russians had an off day with only Yulia Poluyanova scoring 11 points and grabbing 4 rebounds. The rest of the team could not even reach double figures. However, power forward Svetlana Efimov, made partial contribution with 5 points and 7 rebounds.
The Russians made a pathetic start to the first two quarters and by half time they trailed Canada by 30 points and the task of a possible comeback almost looking impossible. However, the Russian team found their rhythm in the third quarter where they successfully reduced the margin to just 14 points. They needed another big final quarter performance; however, the Canadians adopted a defensive mindset and gave the Russians no opportunity to close the gap any further.
