Brazil, Argentina and Peru dominate at CSV Women’s Volleyball Championship
The 2011 CSV Women’s South American Volleyball Championship is underway in Callao, Peru and was officially opened on Wednesday, September 28 with eight teams from South America. Powerhouses Brazil, Argentina, and Peru started the campaign on the right foot
and clinched victories in their respective Day-1 matches. As the tournament entered the second day, they came across different teams but continued with their winning ways.
On Thursday, September 29, Brazil took on Chile and grabbed a 3-0 win. Likewise, Argentina and hosts Peru defeated underdogs Paraguay and Uruguay with identical scores. All three winners of the second day sealed a place in the semi-finals of the biennial
tournament.
Brazil vs. Chile 3-0 (25-8, 25-9, 25-9)
Brazil is the top team of the competition and is seeking its 17th gold medal at the CSV championship. The Chilean side was no match for defending champions Brazi and the squad collapsed in front of the Brazilian hitters and lost the match in straight
sets. The world No.1 side snuffed out any chance their young rivals had of winning. Chile failed to even go into double digit score in any of the three sets.
The Head Coach of Brazilian team, Jose Guimaraes, expressed his views after the match. He stated: "The most important thing is improving our gameplay, I am happy with the team’s performance.”
Argentina vs. Paraguay 3-0 (25-6, 25-10, 25-17)
The runner-up team from the previous edition of the CSV Championship, Argentina, was also successful on the second day of the tournament. They were challenged by the Paraguayan ladies, who put up a great effort to capture a win. Nevertheless, Argentina influenced
the result with its strong offense and solid defence. They comfortably won over Paraguay and finished the match in consecutive sets.
"I want to congratulate Paraguay for the game, their team is showing improvement and that is good for South American Volleyball,” said Argentinean coach Horacio Bastit after the match.
Peru vs. Uruguay 3-0 (25-13, 25-13, 25-13)
The Peruvian team gave the local fans exactly what they wanted as they worked out a perfect 3-0 win over Uruguay and reserved a spot in the semi-finals. Uruguay resisted in full force and tried to outbalance the hosts but remained unsuccessful. The hosts
captured all three sets of the match with an identical score of 25-13. In Coach Luca Cristofani’s view his team had some problems with communication but was ultimately delighted with the team’s winning performance.
At the end of 2011 CSV Women’s South American Championship, one successful squad will get the chance to represent South America at the upcoming Women’s Volleyball World Cup in Japan. Furthermore, three teams from the World Cup will earn tickets to the 2012
London Olympic Games.
