Brazil, Russia and Argentina qualify for semi-finals – 2011 FIVB World League
The influential Final Round of the 2011 FIVB World League is underway in full swing this week. The City of Gdansk in Poland is the hosting the final phase of the men’s premier international volleyball competition.
The tournament was started with 16 teams from all across the globe. Thrilling matches and breath-taking performances were staged in the first preliminary robin round of the tournament, which ran for six weeks. The 2011 FIVB World League Prelims promoted
8 best teams in the Final Round of the championship, which is currently in progress. The Final Round was kicked of Wednesday, July 6 and it is supposed to reach its end on Sunday, July 10.
At the end of second day of Final Round, defending champion Russia, Silver-medallist Russia and Men’s National Team of Argentina reserved their berths in the semi-finals of the tournament. Russia and Brazil advanced to the semi-finals from Pool F, while
Pool E confirmed Argentina for the semis. One more semi-finalist will be defined from Pool E at the completion of third day matches on Friday.
Russia has firmly held the top slot in Pool F after scoring two victories. They put up against U.S. team in the first match on Wednesday and defeated them with a score of 3-1. Russia earned three points by claiming first match. Next up, Cuba was lined-up
for second match against Russia. The Caribbean Team couldn’t stand a chance of survival and lost the match in plain three sets. Another 3 points were added to Russia’s score, which confirmed their participation in the semi-finals.
Brazilian team is also placed in Pool F along with Russia, Cuba and United States. Team Brazil booked a slot in the semi-final by beating Cuban and American Teams, respectively. In the first match, Brazil captured the match with slight difference. They were
awarded 2 points for posting 3-2 victory over Cuba. However, Brazil bagged 3 points for defeating U.S. team in four sets.
Team Argentina is one of the top contenders of the 2011 FIVB World Title. They are grouped in Pool E with teams from Italy Poland and Bulgaria. The Head Coach Javier Weber’s team is currently ruling the group with 6 points. They appeared in two matches and
finished with excellent records. Argentina brushed aside Italy in the first match of Final Round. Italian side could only capture one set, while Argentina claimed three sets. The second match featured Bulgaria as the potential challenger for Argentina. Totally
charged-up Argentinean team didn’t allow Bulgaria to create any problem. Bulgarian received defeat in three straight sets. Argentina bagged six points and advanced to the semis.
