Brazil and Argentina continue winning on day three: Men’s South American Championship - Volleyball
The reigning champions Brazil and Argentina, runner-ups of the last edition to CSV Men’s South American Volleyball Championship, continued their stellar performance on the third day of the current tournament. Brazil defeated the underdog team from Paraguay
in consecutive sets, while Argentina overcame the power of Uruguay in an identical manner. Both top squads dominated their weak rivals and each improved to a 3-0 record in the competition.
Brazil and Argentina are going strong and it seems they will cross paths in the final showdown of the tournament, which will eventually help only one team to advance to the upcoming 2011 FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Cup in Japan.
Brazil vs. Paraguay
Paraguay was no match for the defending champions Brazil. The South American hotshots used a strong offense and held off Paraguay for a 3-0 (25-10, 25-14, 25-11) victory in the match. Paraguay had a difficult time tackling the powerful serves from the Brazilian
players. Furthermore, the quick bump passes and sharp spikes created more trouble for Paraguay. With a better skills and tactful play, Brazil finished the match in straight sets.
Dante Amaral of Brazil was the top-scorer in the match with 13 points.
The Head Coach of the Brazilian team, Bernardinho Rezende, talked about the match in the following manner: “Our team pressured Paraguay with strong serves which made our life easier.” However, the coach did not want to dwell on the victory against easy competitor
like Paraguay, instead he urged his players to stay focused on the upcoming tough matches. He seemed determined to dictate the next opponent Colombia with prolific serving and strong attack on day-4 of the 2011 South American Men’s championship.
Argentina vs. Uruguay
Argentina recorded a spectacular a 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-21) win over Uruguay on Wednesday, September 21. The Head Coach from Argentina, Javier Weber, sent almost every player to centre court. Middle blocker, Pablo Crer, was the only un-changed player on
the Argentinean side, yet the team performed amazingly well and clinched success.
Argentina set the tone in the opening set and finished with a solid lead of 11 points. Uruguay remained unimpressive in the second set, while Argentina improved to a 2-0 lead in the match. The third set was full of cracking action as Uruguay threw everything
in the attack. Nevertheless, Argentina did not allow them to come up and announced match victory by taking the third set at 25-21.
Argentina’s Ivan Castellani and Uruguay’s Renzo Cairus had a tough competition for the position of top-scorer. Both players ended up with 12 points apiece and shared the top position.
Crer stated: “We were able to get all the team on the court. We will need the entire group against Venezuela and Brazil. We had a good game against Uruguay and tomorrow we will have a tough test against Venezuela.”
