Brazil and Latvia win - FIBA U-19 World Championship Roundup July 8, 2011(Part 1)
Game-1: Brazil 77 – Egypt 63
Brazil used a dominant second and third quarter to trounce Egypt by 77-63 on Friday during a classification game of 2011 FIBA U-19 World Championship.
On the day, Brazil dominated from the charity stripe, shooting 72.2 percent from the field in comparison to Egypt’s 41.2 percent shooting. Davi Rossetto led Brazil with 18 points along with two rebounds and four assists while Bruno
Irigoyen tallied 14 points.
Brazilians were sluggish in the beginning and Egyptians took advantage of the situation. By the end of first quarter, the Egyptians were leading Brazil 16-12. Trailing by four points going into the second quarter, Brazil found
their groove and totally outplayed the Egyptian to seal a 40-31lead at halftime.
The first half lead boosted Brazil’s confidence and the continued to tear apart the defences of the Egyptians in the third. The South Americans outperformed the Egyptians 19-11 and pushed their score to 59-42, heading into the
final frame.
The Egyptian team tried to mount a comeback early in the fourth, but the Brazilians had already created a barrier, too large to overcome. Although, the Egyptians outscored Brazil in the final frame, they still lost the game by
14 points. Omar Mohamed was the leading scorer for Egypt. He scored 18 points two rebounds and three assists. Assem Ahmed also added 15 points and clutched 13 rebounds.
Game-2: Latvia 99 – Canada 96
Edmunds Dukulis starred as Latvia rose above Canada 99-96 in a thrilling game at the FIBA Under-19 World Championship on Friday.
Dukulis pounded a double-double with 23 points and 11 rebounds for Latvia. He had an exceptional shooting night, going 57 percent from field, including 78 percent from the three-point range. Davis Bertans and Kaspars Vecvagars
supported him well with 18 and 17 points respectively.
Canada tipped off aggressively and left the Latvians behind with an 11-2 spurt in the initial minutes of the first quarter. However, the Canadians let the momentum slip away as Latvia bridged the gap down to 24-23 by the time,
the first quarter finished.
The scuffle for the lead continued in the second quarter, as the ball swung widely from one end to the other and the scores were tied on three occasions. However, deep in the first half, Canada sprinted to a 16-7 burst to lead
Latvia by 54-44.
After the break, Latvia continued their dominance and raced onto a 71-69. They extended their lead early in the final quarter, but lost the momentum in the mid way through it. That allowed the Canadians to charge back. Canada bounced
back but failed to snatch the lead from the Latvians, who eventually won by three.
Dyshawn Pierre was the major contributor for Canada with his game-high 30 points along with 10 rebounds.
