Brazil bags gold in the X Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup
The final match of the X Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup took place on Saturday, July 9. The Colegio de Bachilleres Gymnasium saw a full house as Brazil and Dominican Republic went head to head. The Olympic Champions, Brazil, secured the top spot in
the tournament by handing out a defeat to Dominican Republic in three back to back set wins.
The first set of the match saw sparks fly between the two teams but the Brazilian squad prevailed in gaining dominance for the majority of the set. The Dominican Republic stepped up their game in the second set of the match and came close to securing a win
and making the match a tie. However, this was not the case and Brazil ended up taking the second set. Playing with a two set deficit, the performance of the Dominican Republic seemed to dwindle as the Brazilian squad did their best to seal the deal and make
it a quick win. As a result, the final match was won by the Brazilians at the following final set scores: 25-20, 25-22 and 25-19.
The coach of the Dominican Republic, Marcos Kwiek, spoke to reporters after the match and said, “We played the whole tournament very well, but today Brazil had more consistency and pushed us hard with their blocks. Also we failed in key points. It is with
pride that we take the silver medal.”
The Brazilian coach, Jose Roberto Guimaraes, expressed his appreciation of the losing team and said, “I am glad with the results. The matches against Dominican Republic are always good as we play at the same level; we must continue in our preparation for
the events that lie ahead of us.”
The championship win is not the first time that the Brazilian squad has gotten their hands on the gold medal of the Pan Am Cup. They have already won the top position for a total of two times previously. The first Pan Am Cup that the Brazilians won was way
back in 2006 while the second one came their way in 2009.
In contrast to this, the Dominican Republic is taking home the silver medal for the fifth time in the history of the Pan Am Cup.
Sheilla Castro and Thaisa Menezes, both of whom were able to score 13 points each for their side, were the stars for the Brazilian squad. However, Prisilla Rivera of the Dominican Republic was able to tally 19 points in all.
