Brazil beats Iran to win 9th position in FIVB Boys' Youth Volleyball World Championship
The ninth place match of the FIVB Boys' Youth Volleyball World Championship took place between Brazil and Iran on August 28th. The venue of the competition was located in the city of Almirante Brown, Argentina. The competition between the two
sides went on for five exciting sets and had the spectators on the edge of their seats all through. At the end of the clash, it was the Brazilian side that proved to be the better team and they ended up grabbing the 9th position in the tournament.
Both the teams played relentlessly in the first set of the game but the Brazilians proved to be more resilient than their opponents in the end. The second set was also an intense struggle but this time around, Iran was able to better their rivals and equalise
the match. The second set victory generated confidence in the Iranians and they bagged the third set too but Brazil prevailed in taking the match to a decisive fifth set. The match was tight in the start of the final set but Brazil was able to finally seal
the deal at the following final set scores: 39-37, 26-28, 26-24, 18-25 and 15-11.
The coach of the Brazilian team, Percy Oncken, made the following comments at the press conference after the match: "I congratulate Iran. They played fantastic. In this game we finally recovered our confidence and spirit. Both teams are great and they deserved
to be in Bahía Blanca for the final stage. I hope to get a better position next time.”
On the other hand, the Iranian coach, Behrouz Ataei Nouri, expressed himself in the following manner: "Congratulations to Brazil. It was a good game. Both teams performed really well.”
The first technical timeout of the opening set came with the Iranians leading at 8-6 which they were able to extend to 16-12. Brazil was able to tie the set at 24-24 and did not give up till they had bagged the first set at 39-37.
The first technical time out of the second set with a Brazilian lead at 8-6. Iran kept the struggle up and was finally able to win the set at 28-26. Both teams remained close in the third set which reached a tie at 24-24 but the Iranians bettered the Brazilians
and got themselves a win at 26-24.
Iran had the lead at 7-4 in the third set and was able to extend the advantage to 16-10. Brazil could not get the advantage in the entire set and saw the Iranians win the frame at 25-18.
The Brazilians were leading in the fifth set at 10-8 but Iran tied the score at 10-10. However, the Iranians could not grab the opportunity and let the set slip to the Brazilians who won it at 15-11.
Even though his team lost the match, the Iranian players Javad Hosseinabadi and Pourya Fayazi became the top scorers by posting 27 points each whereas the lead scorer in the Brazilian squad was Joao Ferreira with 26 points.
