Brazil brush aside Puerto Rico in fourth week of 2011 FIVB World League
The defending champions of this year’s FIVB World League, Brazilian hotshots finished the fourth week of the tournament with another incredible display of tactful game.
They played two matches against Puerto Rico this past weekend and totally launched their authority on the opponents. The first-time qualifier of the FIVB World League, Puerto Rican team couldn’t get out of trouble and constantly failed to break the ice.
Powerhouse Brazil beat them black and blue in both matches and claimed success without losing any set.
Brazil vs. Puerto Rico – Saturday, 18th June
In the on-going competition of 2011 FIVB World League, Brazil and Puerto Rico had their third meeting on Saturday, June 18. The Geraldo Jose Almeida sports hall in Sao Paulo, Brazil hosted the match. A record number of more than 10,000 spectators made their
presence felt during the exciting encounter. Brazil took full advantage of the home support and thrashed 3-0 (25-20, 25-10, and 25-23) victory over guest team from Puerto Rico.
In the very first week of the tournament, Brazil had its first meeting with Puerto Rican squad at the podium of FIVB World League. Despite of playing at the home court and in the presence of local cheering crowd, Puerto Rico’s team couldn’t overcome the
power of strong Brazilians. They badly fell victim to the hard spiking of Brazil and suffered the loss of two matches. The psychological pressure of the previous defeats also affected their performance in third match.
Brazilian team played in its usual style and kept an upper hand on opponents from start till end. Puerto Rican side slipped first two sets of the game easily but put up a fighting score in third set. However, their efforts went futile and Brazil proved to
be better team in all aspects of the game. Puerto Rico lost the match on Saturday, while Brazil bagged success.
Brazil vs. Puerto Rico – Sunday, 19th June
Team Puerto Rico got another chance to prove their endeavours on Sunday, June 19. The same venue hosted the match, while number of spectators increased on the second day. Approximately, 11,000 visitors came to witness the hot action of volleyball in the
city of Sao Paulo. The hosts sent a score of 3-0 (25-10, 25-20, and 25-20) on board and clinched success.
Puerto Rican players faced a lot of difficulty in making a good start. They played under-pressure and made too many unforced mistakes. The pressure of constant failures didn’t allow them to come out of blues. On the other hand, Brazilian team was in top
form. Brazilian captain, Gilberto Godoy Filho came strong on rival side and totally devastated them with speed bombs. Hector Soto and Juan Figueroa of Puerto Rico put up effort to save country’s reputation but Brazilian side simply denied their efforts.
Puerto Rico dropped opening set of the match with a remarkable difference of 10 points. The hard-hitting of Brazilians created a general impression that there was no chance of survival for Puerto Rico. The defending champions were fully prepared to crush
any hurdle in their way. Nonetheless, Puerto Rico’s struggle continued in the next two sets. They tried to follow different strategies but remained under the influence of Brazilian team. Eventually, Brazil was tagged as the successful team of the day.
At the end of fourth week of 2011 FIVB World League, Brazil has firmly held the top slot in Pool A standings with an overall score of 7-1, whereas Puerto Rico has not been able to bag a single victory.
