Brazil claims first win over Italy at 2011 FIVB Women’s Junior World Championship - Volleyball
Brazilian Women’s National Junior Team posted a 3-1 (23-25, 25-20, 25-18, and 25-16) victory over Italy in the opening match of the 2011 FIVB Women’s Junior World Championship. The intense fight of the two archrivals took place on Friday, July 22.
Eduardo Dibos competition hall in Peruvian City Lima served as the venue for the clash between the six-time World Champions Brazil and Silver-medallist Italy in Pool B. Brazil is on its way to add a seventh title to their tally, while Italy has the motivation
to make it to the top slot. Both teams are currently playing the preliminary round robin of the World Championship, which will conclude on the 24th of this month.
Brazil's Gabriela Souza created the most of trouble for her opponents. She used wonderful tactics in the game and helped her team with 22 points as she settled for the top-scorer’s position in the match. Likewise, her team-mate, Caterina Bosetti, contributed
15 points. On the other hand, Italian Valentina Diouf also registered fifteen points in her team’s score.
Team Brazil took a quick start and built a lead of four points over Italy. Samara Almeida was totally on fire as she produced unstoppable spikes and helped her side stay on top. Italy had a strong defence and the Italian players showed some great digging
and diving on the court. Italian attackers came from different angles and eventually put their team in the lead. Brazil tied the score at 20-all but Italy regained power and sealed first set at 25-23.
Brazilian setter, Letizia Camera, offered solid blocking and saved many crucial points for Brazil. The World Champions demonstrated a better play in the second set and managed to achieve set points at 25-20.
Success in the second set proved to be big push for Brazil. The South American team staged a great show of volleyball in the third set and built a lead of 2-1 over Italy by winning it. They continued with their wonderful game plan and stormed the fourth
set.
The coaches and captains of both teams gave an appearance at the press conference, which was held after the match. Head Coaches of both teams agreed that Pool B was a tough group. Luizomar de Moura stated that most teams in their group are candidates of
becoming the champion. Brazilian skipper, Priscila Heldes, said: “It was a great game of both teams. We started okay, we let the rival grow up, but at the end we could take the control.”
Chiara Scarabelli, the Captain of Italy commented: “We do not play the game we hope, but we expect to do it tomorrow.”
