Brazil claims nine out of twenty four gold medals on the 4th day – Parapan American Games 2011
On Thursday the 17th of November 2011, Brazil claimed nine of the twenty four gold medals available on the fourth day of the Parapan American Games held in Guadalajara, Mexico.
The men’s 800 meter T54 was the first race of the day. It was a fairly contentious race as Venezuela’s Juan Valladares (1:41.51) had won the race but was later disqualified for breaking too early. As a consequence, the gold went
to Mexico’s Saul Mendoza Hernandez (1:42.71), silver was taken by Colombia’s Sairo Moises Fernandez Lopez (1:42.89), and the bronze was awarded to Mexico’s Martin Velasco Soria (1:43.38)
In the men’s 800 meter T37, Argentina’s Mariano Dominguez (2:10.88) put in a great effort in the final lap to score the gold ahead of Brazil’s Francisco Daniel Coelho Da Silva (2:16.04), who took the silver and Canada’s Shayne
Dobson (2:19.06) bagged a bronze.
Brazilian Edson Pinheiro (24.03) was unable to beat his Games record but still managed to win the men’s 200 meter T38. He finished clear of Canada’s Kyle Edward Whitehouse (24.37) and his teammate Paulo Pereira (24.41).
Moreover, Brazil’s Ariosvaldo Fernandes Silva (26.74) also completed a sprint double by triumphing in the men’s 200 meter T53 in record time. Silver was awarded to Venezuela’s Jesus Aguilar (27.29) and USA’s Zach Abbott (28.03)
claimed bronze.
The Women’s category saw Brazil’s Jenifer Santos (14.63) pocket an easy gold in the 100 meter T38 and made a Games record. Following behind in the second place was Canada’s Virginia McClachlan (16.74) while, the bronze medal went
to Mexico’s Fatima Del Rocio Perez Garcia (17.42).
The final three events of the day on the track finished with Brazil winning two gold medals starting with the men’s 1,500 meter T11. Odair Santos (4:11.02) easily won gold but the battle for the silver medal was more contested
with Canada’s Jason Joseph Dunkerley (4:20.17) just edging out Brazil’s Carlos Barto Silva, who eventually ended up with the Bronze.
Another four gold medals were added to the list and the first came in the men’s Javelin F44. During the initial round Francisco Lima threw 50.90 meter, a season’s best, which allowed him to grab the top spot on the podium.
Brazil soon saw a second gold medal thanks to Roseana Santos (30.03m) in the women’s discus F57/58. She threw beat Mexico’s Maria de Los Angeles Ortiz (29.49) by throwing further. Nonetheless Oritz bagged silver and Catherine Callaghan
(22.68m) of USA took the bronze medal.
The third gold in the field for Brazil was achieved by Andre Oliveira (6.16m) in the men’s Long Jump F44 and he set a new Games record.
The last and the fourth gold medal was won by Brazil in the women’s Discus F35/36/37 by F35 thrower Marivana Oliveira (22.72m). While, her teammate Shirlene Coelho (27.64m), an F37 thrower, claimed the silver medal.
When all was said and done, Brazil enjoyed a great day and set the bar high for the upcoming athletes.
