Brazil crushes Germany, faces Italy in FIVB World Championship's semi-finals
Brazil beat Germany 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-19), to improve to 2-0 in the third round of the Federation International de Volleyball (FIVB) Men's World Championships. Although Germany had played well throughout
the tournament, and had beat Brazil in a friendly match a couple weeks ago, they were no match for the defending champions on Wednesday.
With the Czech Republic finishing with a 0-2 record in the third round of the Federation Internationale de Volleyball’s (FIVB) Men’s World Championships, a final match between Brazil and Germany was to
decide the winner of Pool R.
Brazil will now take on Italy in the semi-finals, a matchup that could be the most exciting of the entire tournament. Germany fell to 1-1, and will meet the United States in the 5-8 group. The Czech team
will meet France in the 9-12 group.
“Today we did not give our best performance,” said German captain, Bjorn Andrae. “Brazil played well, dominating the match and not allowing us to get into it. It is difficult to play against an experienced
team like Brazil. We have to learn from this defeat. We are a young team and will have ample time to gain maturity and experience.”
Murilo Endres scored 13 points for Brazil, and Leandro Vissotto scored another 11, while Jochen Schops led the German team with 10 points. Brazil beat Germany 3-2 in blocks, and 5-1 in aces.
Endres scored five points in the first set as Brazil beat the younger and less experienced German team 25-17.
The Germans improved in the second set trailing by only one point near the midway point of the set, but solid blocking from the Brazilian team frustrated spiker Andrae as Brazil won the second set 25-20.
“Brazil played well and served in an exceptional manner,” said Robert Kromm, who scored six points for Germany. “They were effective even in blocking and defence. We never had the opportunity to change
the course of the match and express our full potential.”
Germany again played well in the third set, but they were simply outclassed by a powerful Brazilian team, who took the third set, and the match, 25-19.
“We played very well, and were technically precise. We watched many videos to study our opponent, so we were prepared to face them,” said Brazilian captain, Gilberto Godoy Filho. “Now we need to relax
and focus on the semifinal. Italy has an excellent blocking mechanism and defence. It will be fantastic to play against the home team in this particular venue.”
