Brazil defeats Finland to claim the only win in the first week – Volleyball News
Following the loss of two matches in row, Brazil finally managed to shake off the bad impression in third fixture on Sunday, which took place at the Ricoh Coliseum in Toronto, Canada.
Brazil defeated Finland in four-set match, 3-1 (23-25, 25-13, 25-22, 31-29). It was not an easy match but Brazil did amazingly well and overcame the opponent. Success in third match allowed the world No. 1 to settle in the third spot on the ranking chart
of Pool B. The Finnish, on the other hand, moved to the fourth position in the group.
In the first set of the match, both teams displayed a well-balanced action. Long rallies were exchanged and score soared up with close intervals. Finland enjoyed a slightly better position on the scoreboard and tried to put pressure on the Brazilian side.
However, Brazil remained hand-in-hand and did not let the Finnish to take a lead of more than four points. After the second technical timeout, Finland played fast and cruised past to first-set win, 25-23.
After dropping the opening set with narrow margin, Brazilian players showed no mercy and hit with extra power. They broke the tempo of opponents and went up. Brazil took the control of operation in the second set and did not allow Finland to return in the
game. Surprisingly, Finland seemed to have lost momentum that further boosted the morale of Brazilian players. Brazil finished the second set with huge margin of 12 points, 25-13.
Finland try to bounce back and played much better in third set but could not avoid the defeat. Brazil posted 25-22 on board and improved to 2-1 in the match. Brazil gave the final shot in fourth set and finished the game. Finland gave a good competition
to Brazil in the final set but got dismissed by charged-up rivals.
The match was followed by the official press conference, where coaches and captains of both teams disclosed their thoughts.
Brazilian mentor Bernardo Rezende said, “This was a very tough tournament. All the teams fought hard and it made for some wonderful volleyball for the public. Our teamwork today was a little more consistent. We didn’t do as well as we wanted here but we
are headed in the right direction.”
Likewise, his son and the skipper of the team Bruno Rezende had his say about the match. He commented, “Finland continues to improve every year. We are happy with our win; we started to play like a team by helping each other.”
In the next run, the Pool B teams will travel to Poland. The second week matches will be held from June 1-3. In the first match of second week, Brazil and Finland will be featured in the opening match. Visit again for more updates about the tournament.
