Brazil downs Canada in a five-set thriller – Volleyball League
Men’s teams from Brazil and Canada contested their skills in a 2012 FIVB World League match on Friday and staged a head-to-head battle on the centre court.
The situation remained undecided until the ending moments of the match. However Brazil proved to be better and clinched success. The final set scores were 3-2 (22-25, 25-19, 25-14, 19-25, 15-9).
Hakametsä Ice Arena in Tampere, Finland hosted the match and around 2,900 volleyball enthusiasts showed up for the support of their favourite teams.
The action started out with first whistle of referee. Canadian men showed determination and scored early points in the first frame. However, the Brazilian did the same and did not let the opponent go far. Brazil earned one-point lead at the first TTO.
During the break, Canadian team formulised a new plan and went up on scoreboard as the play resumed. Brazil trailed behind but stayed close to Canada on the scoreboard. Meanwhile, Canadians played fast and covered the length of opening set at 25-22.
Brazilian team regrouped in the second set and jumped to two-point lead at the first technical timeout (8-6). Canadians made frequent attempts to catch up with the Brazilians but lagged behind. Brazil continued with success and kept the operations of the
game under hand. Hard hitting enabled Brazil to capture the second 25-19, which levelled the game score at 1-1.
Success in the second set put Brazil on the winning track, while Canada seemed to have lost momentum. Brazil dominated in third set and improved to 2-1 by posting 25-14 on board.
It turned out to be a ‘do or die’ situation for Canada in the fourth set of the match. Brazil was in better position after winning two sets in a row. Nonetheless, Canadians put up good struggle in the fourth set and successfully made a comeback. They captured
fourth set with six points 25-19 and created the dead-lock of 2-2
It was an equal chance for both teams to win the match by taking the finial decisive set. Brazil took a better start and did not allow Canada to come up. Eventually, the final set ended in Brazil’s favour at 15-9 and Canada had to put up with loss.
“Canada played much better offensively than last weekend against us. We had ups and downs. We are little tired and we have to rest a little bit and be ready for the match tomorrow. We try to keep us at the top of the pool,” said Brazilian head coach Bernardo
Rezende after the match.
Canada coach Glenn Hoag stated, “For us it was better match than last weekend and gave us in the offense good results. Brazil always does small things well.”
