Brazil downs Peru to clinch the Olympic berth – Volleyball news
Women’s national volleyball teams from Brazil and Peru crossed their ways in the final showdown of CSV Olympic Qualification Tournament on Sunday.
Brazilian city Sao Carlos hosted the match, where home team used the competitive edge of familiar conditions to overcome the visiting Peruvian ladies. Brazil posted 3-0 (25-12, 25-16, 25-9) victory in the match and reserved a berth at the 2012 London Olympic
Games. Around 8,100 fans made it to the Milton Olaio Filho competition hall in Sao Carlos, Brazil and witnessed the action.
Brazilian team performed exceptionally well and delighted home fans with a convincing win over Peru.
Fernanda Rodrigues of Brazil came on top with match-high 15 points. She displayed an eye-catching action on the net and made a total of 41 attack attempts. She played a big role in Brazil’s success in the crucial Olympic qualifying match. Likewise, Sheilla
Castro and Thaisa Menezes put up a nice show and strengthened Brazilian offence.
Jaqueline Carvalho was quite effective on the defence side. She put her hands up in the air to block almost every shot hit by Peruvian attackers. Tripple-blocks of Jaquenline, Thaisa, and Adenizia made a big difference for Brazil in winning the match.
Brazil started out on strong footing in the match and showed no mercy to the visitors. The home heroines devastated Peruvian defence and seized first-set win with 13 points, 25-12. With better combination of attack and defence, Brazil faced no difficulty
in defeating Peru in the first set.
Visiting Peru improved in the following set and tried to create a little buzz on the centre court. They managed to win more points in second set but still failed to avoid the chance of defeat. Brazil posted 25-16 on board and moved to 2-0 in the match.
Third set proved to be a sort of one-sided affair as Brazil totally dominated the scene. Peruvian team could only claim 9 and acknowledged the better status of hosts.
Brazil is regarded as the defending Olympic champion as the team secured top slot at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games in China. Once again, Brazil has qualified for the Olympics and has aims to defend the title for another year.
Head coach Jose Roberto Guimarães was the main person behind the success of Brazilian squad. He formulized an excellent strategy and plan for his team, which helped the players to clinch the honour. Guimarães shared his views after the match.
He stated, “We played a good qualification tournament, but we have a lot to improve, principally serve and counter-attack. We cannot think that we are fine because the level outside is higher than here. We have to get better in the physical part, the players
need to get stronger.”
