Brazil earns 5th place in FIVB Men's Junior World Championship by defeating Iran
As the Brazilian hopes to win a medal in their home tournament were squashed, they were left to fight for the 5th slot in the FIVB Men's Junior World Championship with the Iranians.
The match between the two teams took place on the 10th August and the venue for the competition was the Maracanazinho Gymnasium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
However, the Brazilian side did not disappoint their fans this time around and scrapped off a win against the Iranians at 3-2. The first set of the match remained tight throughout but the Brazilians prevailed in the end to earn a win. The Iranians did not
let the opening set deficit dampen their spirits and went on to equalise the match by winning the second set.
The Brazilians came out strong in the third and won it by a comfortable margin but the Iranians did not give up yet and brought the match to a decisive fifth set by securing the fourth one. Brazil made sure that the fifth set did not slip out of their hands
and sealed the deal at the following final set scores: 25-22, 20-25, 19-25, 25-22 and 15-10.
The Brazilian coach, Leonardo Carvalho, expressed his feelings about the match in the following words, “It was a difficult match as Iran has a very good team. Both teams could be in the finals of the tournament. I am glad as my players found a good motivation
to play our last two matches. Fifth place was the best we could achieve and we have to be happy with that.”
Whereas the Iranian coach, Jovica Cvetkovic, gave the following statements at the press conference after the match, “I am satisfied with my team in this match. Both teams fought for the win until the end and made the best they could.”
The opening match started in favour of the Brazilians as they were able to get the advantage at 8-3 that Brazil was able to improve till 16-10. The Iranians did not give up the chase and tied the match at 22-22 but the Brazilians prevailed in the first set
win at 25-22.
Iran was determined from the beginning of the second set and was able to get the lead at 7-3 that stayed with them till 16-11. Brazil managed to come close at 22-19 but the Iranians did not give them any headway and bagged the second set at 25-20.
Iran started the third set well but Brazil got the lead only to relinquish it in a tie at the 13th point. Iran did not compromise its game and secured another win at 25-19.
The fourth set was tied at 16-16 but Brazil managed to move up ahead and scrap a win at 25-22. The fifth set went tight in the beginning but Brazil got the advantage at 11-7 that led them to a 15-10 win.
The Brazilian Luan Weber was able to lead his team by scoring 29 points while the Iranian Amir Ghafour was able to tally 26 points for his team.
