Brazil earns seat in final round of Continental Cup – Women’s beach volleyball
Brazil qualified for the final round of the Continental Cup after making a clean sweep at the 2011 CSV Continental Beach Volleyball Cup, which rounded off on Sunday, December 11. A total of 10 teams from five South American countries were on board to showcase
their skills. The rainy beach of Guatape in Colombia hosted all the action for five days. The beach volleyball enthusiasts got to see some extreme action over the weekend as the participants went through the final phase of the tournament. At the end of the
campaign, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, and Venezuela qualified for the final round of the Continental Cup.
Brazil remained undefeated and finished in the top position with 31 points, whereas Argentina settled for second place on account of 26 points in the tournament. Elsewhere, host Colombia, Venezuela and Uruguay finished with 21 points each. Colombia narrowly
missed the qualification due to low set ratio.
Brazil was led by duo of Camila Fonseca and Isabela Maio in the first match of the final day of 2011 CSV Continental Cup. Brazil 1 crossed paths with archrival Argentinean pairing of Luciana Forguez and Gabriela Albano. The Brazilian side was equipped with
all the necessary tools to win the match. They followed a smart approach of hitting the ball in the right areas and earned a 2-0 (21-14, 21-14) victory over Argentina.
Following the wonderful performance of Fonseca and Isabela, Brazil 2’s Livia Mendonca and Thais Ferreira jumped into action. They further extended the winning streak of Brazil by defeating Karelys Mosquera and Norisbeth Agudo of Venezuela 2. Brazilian pair
started out well and led the game all the way until the end. They posted 2-0 (21-15, 21-14) win over Venezuela and bagged two points.
The winning pair of Fonseca and Isabela completed their participation in the 2011 CSV Continental Cup with an outstanding victory over Venezuela 1 (Orquidea Vera/ Frankelina Rodrigues). Venezuela claimed the first set of the match and tried to put pressure
on Brazil. However, Fonseca and Isabela improved and rallied to beat the opponents in the second set. In the tiebreak set, Brazil picked up early lead and did not Venezuela to come up. They sent 15-9 on board in third set and announced match victory, 2-1 (19-21,
21-19, 15-9).
Fonseca commented after the match and said: "Previously, we were able to win matches on our serve, but now have to concentrate very hard to win. We came here to win all our matches but faced some strong teams."
Brazil played its last match of the tournament against host Colombia. Livia/ Thais went against Colombia’s Galindo sisters. Despite massive support of home fans, the local duo dropped the decision to visiting Brazil and received 0-2 (18-21, 12-21).
